Sintana Energy (LON:SEI) has taken a meaningful step forward in its offshore exploration strategy, with the commencement of a significant 3D seismic acquisition programme in Uruguay. The latest research note from Cavendish highlights this development as an important milestone for the company, reinforcing its exposure to a potentially attractive frontier basin.

According to Cavendish research analyst James McCormack, the company has now begun seismic work on its offshore licence in Uruguay, a move that could provide valuable geological insights over the coming months.

Major Seismic Campaign Underway Offshore Uruguay

Sintana Energy has launched a large-scale 3D seismic survey across the AREA OFF-1 block offshore Uruguay. The programme will cover approximately 4,300 square kilometres, providing detailed subsurface data that may help identify potential hydrocarbon prospects within the licence area.

The survey is being carried out by Viridien using the BGP Prospector seismic vessel. The work is expected to take place over two acquisition seasons, with the first sets of results anticipated later in the decade.

In the research note, James McCormack wrote:
Sintana Energy (SEI.L, 30p, £154m) has commenced its 3D seismic acquisition campaign on AREA OFF-1 offshore Uruguay, covering approximately 4,300 km².

Fast-track seismic results are expected during the fourth quarter of 2026, while the full pre-stack depth migration (PSDM) dataset is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2027.

Strong Partner Support

Sintana Energy holds a 40 percent non-operated interest in the AREA OFF-1 block. The licence is operated by an affiliate of Chevron Corporation, which holds the remaining 60 percent working interest.

Importantly, Chevron is carrying the full cost of the seismic programme. This arrangement enables Sintana to maintain exposure to the exploration potential of the block without funding the seismic acquisition directly.

James McCormack explained in the research note:
Sintana Energy holds a 40% non-operated interest in the block, with Chevron Corporation’s affiliate holding a 60% operating interest and carrying the total cost of the seismic program.

Such partnerships with large international operators can be valuable for smaller exploration companies, particularly when pursuing early stage frontier opportunities that require substantial technical work and capital investment.

Regulatory Clarity in Uruguay

The research note also highlighted a recent development in Uruguay’s regulatory environment. Court challenges raised by an activist group regarding environmental processes have been rejected, removing potential uncertainty around the project.

James McCormack noted:
This development follows court rejections of activist group interventions, underscoring the robustness of Uruguay’s environmental processes.

The decision provides additional clarity for operators in the region and supports the continuation of exploration activities in the basin.

Strategic Importance of the Programme

The seismic campaign is a crucial early stage step in evaluating the geological potential of the AREA OFF-1 block. High quality seismic data is essential for identifying drilling targets and refining exploration strategies.

For Sintana Energy, the programme provides an opportunity to advance its understanding of the basin while maintaining financial discipline through its carried position. With Chevron acting as operator and funding the seismic work, the company retains meaningful exposure to any exploration success that may follow.

Final Thoughts

Sintana Energy’s new seismic campaign offshore Uruguay represents a notable step in its exploration journey. Backed by a major industry partner and supported by regulatory clarity in the region, the programme has the potential to unlock important geological insights over the next two years. As seismic results begin to emerge from 2026 onwards, investors and industry observers will be watching closely to see what this frontier basin might reveal.
