Carbon ceramics are no longer just for supercars

Surface-Transforms

Carbon ceramic brakes have long been the preserve of hypercars and race vehicles, valued for their ability to perform under extreme conditions without fading or wearing out. Their advantages are clear, exceptional heat resistance, far lower weight compared to traditional steel discs, and a much longer service life.

The rise of electric vehicles has added fresh urgency to lightweighting and performance efficiency. Reducing unsprung mass directly improves ride quality and battery efficiency, and with EVs often heavier than combustion equivalents, braking systems are coming under fresh scrutiny. Carbon ceramics offer a high-performance solution that also aligns with the low-maintenance expectations of the EV market. Premium OEMs are taking notice.

Surface Transforms, based in the UK, is currently the only company in the world with the capability to manufacture carbon ceramic discs using a proprietary continuous-fibre process entirely in-house. That distinction matters. The result is a disc that can be tailored to different applications while delivering better thermal performance and durability than legacy ceramic products. Several OEMs across high-performance and luxury segments are already working with Surface Transforms, and its customer pipeline is expanding.

Surface Transforms plc (LON:SCE) are experts in the development and production of carbon-ceramic materials and the UK’s only manufacturer of carbon-ceramic brakes for automotive use.
