Billington Structures has hosted students from Sheffield College at its Wombwell and Shafton sites as part of a student engagement initiative delivered with VINCI Construction UK. The visit gave students direct exposure to structural steelwork operations and showed how the company is helping to build interest in future careers across fabrication, design, engineering and construction.
Access to skilled people remains an important factor for businesses working across construction and specialist engineering. Structural steelwork requires technical knowledge, practical training and experience, so early engagement with students can help strengthen the future workforce available to the sector.
During the visit, students heard from Production Director Jon Wright and Design Engineer Tiago Simoes, who explained how Billington Structures delivers complex steelwork projects. Their presentations covered the journey from design to fabrication and installation, giving students a clearer understanding of the roles, processes and standards involved in the company’s work.
The group then toured the Wombwell production facility before visiting the Shafton site. This gave students the chance to see live fabrication activity and understand how designs are turned into finished steelwork for major construction projects.
Billington Structures said the students were highly engaged, with strong interest shown in its apprenticeship programme and wider career opportunities. That response is positive for a business that depends on trained people across technical and operational roles. Apprenticeships can provide a clear route into the company and help support longer-term skills availability.
