Billington Structures is expanding its track record in the energy sector by delivering structural steelwork for large and technically complex infrastructure projects. The company has worked on a range of Energy from Waste and energy infrastructure schemes, including Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre, Rivenhall Energy from Waste, Westfield Energy Recovery Facility, Newhurst and Earls Gate Energy from Waste Facilities.
These projects require more than standard structural steelwork. The design must accommodate boilers, flues, conveyors, waste bunkers, heavy-duty gantry cranes and extensive mechanical services. That increases the need for close coordination between structural design, fabrication and installation.
Billington Structures is currently delivering the structural steelwork package for the North London Heat and Power Project. The scheme is one of the largest and most technically demanding energy infrastructure projects in the company’s portfolio.
A key part of the package is a 60-metre mega truss. It was fabricated in 10-metre sections, transported to site and assembled as part of the wider construction programme. Billington Structures is also delivering a modular stack structure, adding further complexity to the fabrication and installation work. The project highlights the company’s ability to handle large steel packages where logistics, sequencing and technical coordination are critical to delivery.
Billington Structures has also completed the structural steelwork package for the Skelton Grange Energy from Waste Facility. The package involved approximately 3,000 tonnes of steelwork. The structure was designed to create large column-free areas while supporting overhead crane operation and heavy process equipment. Modular roof construction was also used as part of the project.
The company’s experience across several energy projects gives it a stronger base from which to compete for similar work.
Billington Structures also worked on the Greenwich Peninsula Energy Centre, where the steelwork package included the facility’s distinctive flue tower. During construction, the company developed an alternative temporary stability solution to support the erection process while maintaining the original architectural design. The completed energy centre forms part of a major district heating network.
