This year’s World Mental Health Day’s theme was ‘mental health impact of repeated exposure to news coverage of crises and conflicts.’
Constant updates on war, climate change, politics, and economic stress can push your system into overload. Even if you’re not always aware of it, this kind of pressure builds up.
Feeling overwhelmed can show up in many ways; irritability, poor concentration, low energy, restlessness, anxiety, or emotional exhaustion. You might notice you’re snapping at people more easily, struggling to focus, or simply feeling flat and disconnected. These are signs your brain and body are under strain.
The good news is there are things you can do.
Start by limiting how often you check the news. Set specific times and avoid scrolling before bed or first thing in the morning. You can stay informed without taking in constant distress.
Next, be clear about your limits. Say no when you need to. Protect your time and energy. Even small boundaries, like turning your phone off for an hour or avoiding heated discussions, can make a difference.
Try grounding techniques that bring you back to the present. Breathe slowly. Notice what you can see, hear, or touch. Get some fresh air.
Focus on what’s within your control. You can’t solve every crisis, but you can take small actions that matter to you, whether that’s recycling, donating, helping a neighbour, or getting involved in your local community.
Above all, give yourself permission to rest. You don’t need to earn it. Sleep, take breaks, watch something light, move your body, or talk to someone you trust.
