Billington Structures has underlined its focus on workforce development and long-term industry capability by welcoming a group of school leavers to its Shafton facility as part of the nationwide Open Doors event.
Open Doors is a UK-wide initiative that gives young people a clearer view of opportunities across construction and steel. At Billington Structures, the event was designed to introduce school leavers to the practical and technical career paths available within the business, while also demonstrating the company’s role in delivering large-scale projects across the UK.
The visit began with an introductory presentation covering Billington Structures’ operations, core services and involvement in major projects. Students were shown how different functions contribute to project delivery, including design and engineering, fabrication, site installation and project management.
Attendees then toured the Shafton manufacturing facility, where they were able to see the scale and precision involved in structural steel fabrication. The facility tour offered practical insight into day-to-day operations and the processes that underpin the company’s work.
The programme concluded at the BetterWeld training facility, where students took part in supervised welding and fabrication activities. This hands-on element gave participants a direct sense of the skills developed through apprenticeships and other entry routes into the sector. It also highlighted the importance of structured training in building practical capability, which can be a key factor in managing execution risk as demand for technical skills continues across the industry.
