Billington Structures has launched its Fabrication Academy, with 15 apprentices starting the programme in September 2026. The initiative is designed to develop skilled steelwork fabricators, strengthen workforce capacity and support the company’s long-term operational requirements.
The 12-month programme combines college-based learning with practical experience across the business. Working with training provider Betterweld, apprentices will spend four days a week at college and one day gaining workplace experience.
Training will cover different areas of factory operations and technical departments, alongside visits to construction sites. Each apprentice will also have a dedicated mentor to support their development.
Before entering the live production facility, apprentices will complete mandatory health and safety training and work towards recognised BS EN ISO 9606 welder qualifications.
The academy is intended to establish a consistent pipeline of skilled workers as Billington plans for future staffing requirements. It will also support succession planning as experienced employees approach retirement and reduce the company’s reliance on external recruitment.
Billington intends to recruit between 10 and 15 fabrication apprentices each year. Apprentices will develop their skills and competencies before gradually taking on greater responsibilities within production.
The launch represents a longer-term investment in the company’s workforce, with structured training aimed at developing the capabilities required to support its operations and future growth.
