Billington Structures has won the Laureate Award at the European Steel Design Awards 2026 for its work on the Skelton Grange Energy from Waste Facility.
The award was announced at EUROSTEEL 2026 in Cracow on 16 September. Skelton Grange was selected from 10 nominated projects, giving Billington Structures further recognition for its structural engineering, fabrication and project delivery capabilities.
The project involved the fabrication and supply of approximately 3,000 tonnes of structural steelwork across seven buildings. The work was delivered within a 41-week programme, requiring close coordination across design, fabrication and installation.
Billington Structures erected around 60% of the steelwork. The balance was supplied for installation alongside process equipment, increasing the need for accurate sequencing and coordination with other contractors.
Key technical elements included a 50-metre crane-support mega-truss, structures designed to withstand fatigue from continuous operation and perforated arch girders spanning the full width of the waste bunker. The project also included a double-curved roof designed to reduce the visual scale of the facility.
The award provides further evidence of Billington Structures’ ability to deliver large, technically demanding projects. Complex industrial and energy infrastructure work can carry significant execution risk, particularly where structural steelwork must be integrated with specialist equipment and delivered to a fixed construction programme.
