Billington Structures has won the Laureate Award at the European Steel Design Awards 2026 for its work on the Skelton Grange Energy from Waste Facility.
The award was announced at EUROSTEEL 2026 in Cracow on 16 September, with the project selected from 10 nominated steel construction projects across Europe.
The recognition relates to the scale and technical complexity of the Skelton Grange project. Billington Structures was appointed as the structural steelwork contractor and fabricated and supplied approximately 3,000 tonnes of structural steelwork across seven buildings. Around 60% of the steelwork was also erected by the company, with the remainder supplied for installation alongside the facility’s process equipment.
The steelwork was delivered within a 41-week programme, requiring coordination across design, fabrication and installation. The ESDA jury specifically recognised the engineering and digital coordination required to deliver the project.
Among the features highlighted was a 50-metre crane-support mega-truss, which forms part of the facility’s structural system. The project also incorporates fatigue-resistant structures designed for continuous operation and perforated arch girders spanning the full width of the waste bunker.
The architectural design was another factor in the award. The facility has a double-curved roof designed to reduce the building’s visual scale, with the structural steelwork forming part of the building’s overall architectural identity.
Managing Director Daniel Duffield said the award recognised the technical work achieved on the project and the collaboration between Billington, KVI, Dornan and other supply chain partners.
