Asian equity markets advanced on Wednesday as renewed enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI) lifted technology shares, with investors also assessing corporate earnings and preparing for the latest US Federal Reserve interest-rate decision.
The recovery in sentiment followed gains on Wall Street, where major technology companies helped support the market ahead of results from Alphabet and Microsoft. Investors are looking for evidence that substantial spending on AI infrastructure, including data centres, processors and networking equipment, can translate into sustainable revenue growth and stronger earnings.
South Korea led regional gains as semiconductor shares attracted renewed buying interest. The MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan rose 0.85% in early trading, while Japan’s Nikkei gained 1.2% and South Korea’s Kospi advanced by more than 3% in the morning session. Taiwan’s Taiex also moved higher, reflecting continued demand for companies linked to AI infrastructure.
SK Hynix provided a significant boost to market sentiment after the South Korean memory chipmaker reported a more than sevenfold increase in quarterly operating profit. The results reinforced expectations for continued demand for memory products used in AI systems. SK Hynix shares initially gained 3% after the market opened before trimming some of their advance.
The company’s results offer further evidence of the commercial opportunities emerging from increased investment in AI computing capacity. However, the extent to which this demand can be sustained remains a central consideration for technology valuations, particularly as companies commit substantial capital to infrastructure development.
Investors are also monitoring developments at other major semiconductor businesses, including Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Their performance is relevant to the wider technology sector because semiconductor manufacturers supply components used across AI computing systems and related infrastructure.
