Asian markets find support from technology shares and hopes of policy backing

Asian equity markets showed a mixed but generally constructive picture on Monday, with technology shares and expectations of further support for China’s capital markets helping to underpin sentiment. The regional performance came against a backdrop of renewed volatility in the global technology sector, as investors continued to assess artificial intelligence spending, corporate earnings and the wider economic implications of geopolitical developments.

Chinese equities attracted particular attention after reports that financial regulators would meet with banks and securities firms to discuss measures aimed at supporting the country’s capital markets. The prospect of additional policy support provided a positive influence on Chinese shares, reinforcing expectations that authorities remain focused on stabilising market conditions and maintaining confidence.

This policy backdrop is significant because it places financial sector support and market liquidity among the factors shaping regional positioning. Any measures agreed following discussions between regulators and financial institutions could influence sentiment towards Chinese equities, although the immediate market response does not establish how extensive or effective future support may prove to be.

Across the wider Asia-Pacific region, gains were recorded by most constituents of the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, although the benchmark itself remained slightly lower. This divergence suggests that the regional advance was not sufficiently broad or strong to produce an overall index gain. Performance therefore continued to vary between individual markets and sectors, making the composition of regional returns an important consideration.

Technology remained a central influence. Semiconductor-related shares showed signs of stabilisation alongside an anticipated recovery in US chipmaker stocks, but the sector continued to face scrutiny following recent selling pressure. Concerns about the scale of artificial intelligence investment, financing requirements and the ability of companies to translate expenditure into sustainable earnings remained prominent.

Japan provided a more cautious signal. Kioxia Holdings fell sharply after issuing a guarded outlook, highlighting the sensitivity of semiconductor valuations to forward guidance and expectations for future demand. The reaction also illustrated how quickly sentiment can change when companies operating in the artificial intelligence supply chain deliver results or forecasts that fall short of elevated market expectations.
