Vanadium sulphate market growth linked to sustainable production and energy storage

Ferro-Alloy Resources Group, Share price and news

Sustainability initiatives are influencing the vanadium sulphate market as manufacturers seek to reduce environmental impacts, improve resource efficiency and strengthen supply chain transparency. Demand from energy storage and industrial applications is increasing interest in responsible sourcing, recycling and lower-impact processing methods.

Vanadium sulphate is relevant to vanadium redox flow batteries, which store energy in liquid electrolytes and are used in stationary energy storage. These systems can support the integration of renewable electricity by storing energy for later use. Vanadium also has an established role in steel production, where it is used to improve strength and durability.

Steel remains the principal application for vanadium. US Geological Survey data for 2025 indicates that metallurgical applications, primarily iron and steel alloying, accounted for more than 90% of reported US vanadium consumption. This figure relates to the US market and should not be interpreted as a global consumption share.

The development of grid-scale energy storage provides a separate area of potential demand for vanadium-based products. As renewable energy capacity expands, long-duration storage technologies are receiving greater attention. Vanadium redox flow batteries use electrolytes containing vanadium to store and release energy, creating a potential market for battery-grade vanadium sulphate.

Sustainable production is becoming a consideration for companies involved in mining, processing and supplying vanadium compounds. Hydrometallurgical processing, bioleaching and solvent extraction are among the techniques being explored or used in mineral processing to improve recovery and manage environmental impacts. Their effectiveness depends on the resource, production process and operating conditions.

Recycling is another area of interest. Recovering vanadium from steel slag and other industrial waste streams could reduce reliance on newly mined material and improve resource efficiency. The commercial viability of recycling depends on recovery costs, material quality and the availability of suitable waste streams.

Ferro-Alloy Resources Ltd (LON:FAR) is developing the giant Balasausqandiq vanadium deposit in Kyzylordinskaya oblast of southern Kazakhstan. The ore at this deposit is unlike that of nearly all other primary vanadium deposits and is capable of being treated by a much lower cost process.
