UK tidal energy edges closer to scale

Ampeak Energy Limited

The UK’s tidal energy sector is receiving renewed attention as technological progress and targeted research begin to address long-standing barriers to commercial deployment. With some of the world’s strongest tidal currents and large coastal ranges, the UK has long been viewed as one of the most promising markets for marine renewable power. Yet despite this natural advantage, tidal generation has struggled to move beyond demonstration scale.

While wind and solar have rapidly scaled on the back of falling costs and established supply chains, tidal technologies have remained earlier in their commercial development cycle. Developers have therefore focused on improving turbine reliability, reducing installation costs and demonstrating long-term operational performance in harsh marine environments.

The appeal of tidal energy lies primarily in predictability. Unlike wind and solar output, tidal currents follow consistent gravitational cycles that can be forecast years in advance. This characteristic gives tidal generation potential value in a future electricity system with high levels of intermittent renewable power. Predictable output may allow grid operators to balance supply more efficiently and reduce reliance on backup generation.

The UK government has taken steps to encourage progress through targeted support mechanisms for marine energy projects. These measures aim to provide revenue visibility for developers while allowing the technology to mature.

Ampeak Energy Limited (LON:AMP) a developer, owner and operator of sustainable energy projects. Transitioning to become a major Independent Power Producer (IPP) with a project development arm specialising in Battery Storage and Tidal Stream generation.
