The MeyGen project in Scotland is moving tidal energy closer to large-scale commercial use.
Located in the fast-moving waters of the Pentland Firth, MeyGen is the world’s largest tidal stream energy array. Four fully submerged turbines are currently operating on the seabed, generating enough electricity to supply around 7,000 homes.
The project is important because tidal energy offers something wind and solar cannot provide with the same certainty: predictable generation. Tides follow fixed cycles that can be calculated years in advance. This gives grid operators clearer visibility over when electricity will be produced and reduces the forecasting risk associated with weather-dependent renewable energy.
Each turbine works in a similar way to an underwater wind turbine. The movement of the tide turns the blades, which drive a generator and send electricity to the grid through subsea cables. The turbines remain below the surface, limiting their visual impact and allowing them to operate without taking up land.
MeyGen has taken more than a decade to reach its current position. That long development period reflects the technical demands of operating equipment in deep, fast-flowing seawater. Turbines must withstand strong currents, corrosion and difficult maintenance conditions while continuing to deliver reliable power.
The project has now shown that tidal stream technology can operate as a connected power asset rather than only as a demonstration system. Proven operation reduces some of the uncertainty around performance, maintenance and deployment, although costs and scalability remain central considerations.
Plans to expand MeyGen to as many as 130 turbines would move the site well beyond its current scale. A larger array could improve operating efficiency, support supply-chain development and provide more evidence on the economics of tidal energy. It would also test whether the technology can be deployed repeatedly rather than on a limited project basis.
