The Pentland Firth is shifting from theoretical resource to operational energy site, with projects such as MeyGen providing tangible evidence of tidal power in practice. Situated between mainland Scotland and the Orkney Islands, the channel’s strong and regular tidal currents are now being harnessed to generate electricity, offering a clearer view of how this form of renewable energy can scale.
MeyGen is one of the most developed tidal stream projects globally and is already supplying power to the grid. Its phased rollout has allowed multiple turbines to be installed and tested under real operating conditions. This has provided valuable data on performance, maintenance requirements, and system durability. The relevance is practical rather than conceptual.
Unlike wind or solar, tidal flows are governed by fixed lunar cycles, meaning generation patterns can be forecast accurately years in advance. In the Pentland Firth, where water is funnelled through a narrow channel at high speeds, this predictability is combined with strong energy density. The result is a renewable resource that is both consistent and capable of meaningful output.
