Kazakhstan’s mineral wealth is gaining greater strategic relevance as governments and industrial groups seek alternatives to concentrated critical-metal supply chains. Vanadium could become an important part of that shift, supported by its established role in steel production and its growing potential in large-scale energy storage.
The metal is used to strengthen steel for infrastructure, pipelines and defence applications. It is also a key component in vanadium redox flow batteries, which are designed to provide long-duration electricity storage for power grids. As renewable generation expands, grid operators require reliable systems capable of storing energy for several hours and releasing it when supply falls or demand rises.
This combination gives vanadium exposure to both traditional industrial activity and the longer-term development of energy infrastructure. However, global production remains heavily concentrated. China accounts for more than 72% of supply, while Russia contributes around 18.5%. Production pressures elsewhere have further reduced the number of dependable sources available to markets seeking greater diversification.
Kazakhstan has known vanadium resources, an established mining sector and experience hosting major international investment. Its location between large Asian markets and Western-facing trade routes also strengthens its potential role in future critical-mineral supply chains.
Ferro-Alloy Resources holds the exploration and development rights to the Balasausqandiq vanadium deposit, the most advanced of Kazakhstan’s three known vanadium assets. The company is listed in London and Astana and has operated in Kazakhstan for more than two decades.
The latest resource estimate covers 32.9 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.62% vanadium pentoxide. Importantly, that estimate relates to only one of seven identified ore bodies within the company’s licence area, leaving scope for substantial expansion if further development work supports the broader geological potential.
Ferro-Alloy Resources Ltd (LON:FAR) is developing the giant Balasausqandiq vanadium deposit in Kyzylordinskaya oblast of southern Kazakhstan. The ore at this deposit is unlike that of nearly all other primary vanadium deposits and is capable of being treated by a much lower cost process.
