JPMorgan European Discovery Trust (LON:JEDT) is demonstrating the benefits of its investment management approach, with improved performance and an emphasis on identifying undervalued European smaller companies offering long-term growth potential.

According to the latest research note from Edison Investment Research, published on 20 October 2026, the trust has made encouraging progress under its investment management team, while attractive valuations across European smaller companies continue to present opportunities.

Research analyst Mel Jenner highlights the trust’s improving record, disciplined stock selection and exposure to businesses benefiting from favourable structural and economic trends.

Strong FY26 Performance Ahead of the Benchmark

JPMorgan European Discovery Trust delivered an encouraging financial year to 31 March 2026, outperforming its benchmark on both a net asset value (NAV) and share price total return basis.

FY26 Performance Highlights:

  • NAV total return: 23.2%, compared with the benchmark’s 17.5%.
  • Share price total return: 21.0%, outperforming the benchmark by 3.5 percentage points.
  • Benchmark: MSCI Europe ex UK Small Cap (Net) Total Return Index.
  • Portfolio diversification: Approximately 75 European smaller company holdings.
  • Top 10 holdings: Represented 26.7% of the portfolio at 31 August 2026, compared with 21.2% a year earlier.

The stronger results reflect the benefits of the trust’s stock selection strategy, alongside exposure to European businesses supported by infrastructure investment, defence spending and other long-term growth trends.

New Investment Managers Delivering Encouraging Progress

The appointment of Jon Ingram, Jack Featherby and Jules Bloch on 1 March 2024 marked an important development for JPMorgan European Discovery Trust.

Since taking responsibility for the portfolio, the managers have concentrated on identifying exceptional smaller companies that may have been overlooked by the wider investment community.

Edison’s research highlights the progress achieved under the team, with JEDT ranking first among the three trusts in the Association of Investment Companies’ European Smaller Companies sector for both one-year and three-year NAV total returns, based on figures to 15 October 2026.

The trust recorded a one-year NAV total return of 13.1% and a three-year return of 74.5%. Its five-year return of 23.1% placed it second in the sector.

These figures indicate a meaningful improvement in relative performance, although recent market volatility has presented challenges.

Finding Tomorrow’s European Growth Businesses

JPMorgan European Discovery Trust focuses on smaller European companies outside the UK, seeking businesses with attractive fundamentals, reasonable valuations and improving prospects.

The investment managers assess potential holdings against three important questions: whether the company is a good business, whether its shares are attractively valued and whether its outlook is improving.

This approach is supported by JPMorgan’s extensive research capabilities and proprietary investment technology.

Edison research analyst Mel Jenner writes:

“With their superior growth rate, European small-cap stocks have outpaced the performance of all the major equity markets over the long term.”

Despite their historical long-term performance, European smaller companies currently trade at relatively attractive valuations. Edison notes that the asset class is valued at approximately one standard deviation below its long-term average cyclically adjusted price-to-earnings ratio.

For patient investors, this combination of growth potential and comparatively modest valuations provides a reason to consider the sector.

European Economic Trends Creating Opportunities

Several structural developments could support the outlook for European smaller companies.

German fiscal stimulus, increased defence expenditure, electrification, the reshoring of manufacturing and greater investment in digital infrastructure are among the trends identified in the research.

Smaller European businesses often generate a significant proportion of their revenues within domestic markets, potentially positioning them to benefit from these developments.

The managers also believe that periods of market volatility can create opportunities to identify fundamentally sound companies whose share prices have fallen further than their business prospects might justify.

However, geopolitical uncertainty and broader economic conditions remain important considerations.

A Diversified Portfolio of European Businesses

The trust’s investment approach is reflected in holdings spanning financial services, technology, healthcare, industrial businesses and consumer-related companies.

At 31 August 2026, its largest positions included Norwegian insurer Storebrand and Danish banking group Sydbank, each representing 3.3% of the portfolio.

Other significant investments included ISS, Cairn Homes, Vienna Insurance Group, De’Longhi, Reply, Attendo, Glanbia and Puuilo.

The latest Edison research also examines Glanbia, the Irish nutrition company benefiting from trends including higher protein consumption, active lifestyles and weight management.

Glanbia’s operational improvement initiatives, including a targeted $60 million annual cost-saving programme, could support margin expansion.

The trust’s geographic exposure is also diversified, with Sweden, France, Italy, Austria and Germany among its largest country allocations.

Share Price Discount Offers an Additional Consideration

Another feature highlighted in Edison’s research is the trust’s discount to net asset value.

At the dates stated in the report, JPMorgan European Discovery Trust had:

  • Share price: 616p.
  • Net asset value: 665.5p per share, at 15 October 2026.
  • Discount to NAV: 7.4%.
  • Market capitalisation: Approximately £547 million.
  • Dividend yield: 2.6%.
  • Net gearing: 2.6%, at 16 October 2026.

The 7.4% discount compares with average discounts of 9.0% over three years, 11.1% over five years and 11.9% over ten years.

While the discount is already narrower than its historical averages, Edison suggests that an improving European economic environment could provide additional support.

The trust’s board also monitors the discount and may repurchase shares where appropriate.

Investors should nevertheless recognise that discounts can widen, smaller companies can experience heightened volatility and gearing can amplify losses during falling markets.

Final Thoughts

The latest research note from Edison Investment Research presents an encouraging picture for JPMorgan European Discovery Trust, highlighting better relative performance, a clearly defined investment process and exposure to potentially attractive European smaller companies.

The progress made under Jon Ingram, Jack Featherby and Jules Bloch is particularly noteworthy, with the trust achieving leading one-year and three-year NAV total return rankings within its AIC sector.

For investors considering European smaller companies, JEDT offers access to a diversified portfolio focused on identifying businesses with sound fundamentals, improving prospects and attractive valuations.

Although market uncertainty and investment risks remain, the combination of an improving management record and opportunities within European small-cap markets provides a constructive backdrop for the trust’s long-term capital growth objective.
