European shares advanced on Friday as corporate earnings and signs of stabilisation in global technology stocks helped improve sentiment following a volatile week. Investors also assessed government bond yields, expectations for US interest rates and incoming eurozone inflation data, with markets remaining sensitive to the financial risks associated with artificial intelligence investment.
The pan-European STOXX 600 rose during the session, moving towards its strongest weekly performance since late June. Germany’s DAX and France’s CAC 40 also gained as investors returned to equities following recent selling across technology and semiconductor stocks.
The recovery came after concerns about the scale of borrowing used to finance AI infrastructure projects prompted a sell-off in global technology shares. Investors have become increasingly focused on whether substantial spending on data centres, computing capacity and related infrastructure can generate sufficient returns to justify current valuations.
European markets benefited from a combination of company-specific earnings updates and improving conditions in global bond markets. Falling US Treasury yields helped support equities, while the US dollar weakened as investors reassessed the outlook for monetary policy.
Industrials were among the stronger-performing European sectors, reflecting the contribution of earnings news and company outlooks to market direction. Investors continued to distinguish between businesses reporting tangible demand and earnings progress and those more exposed to uncertainty surrounding AI investment and borrowing.
