EDX Medical builds scale through Scottish Prostate Cancer Testing programme

EDX Medical Group plc

The Scottish Prostate Cancer Initiative has tested more than 12,500 men since March and plans to reach 25,000 participants. EDX Medical is providing the laboratory testing, supported by the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust.

The programme was launched by Sir Chris Hoy, Kenny Logan, Sir Tom Hunter and EDX Medical founder Sir Chris Evans. Testing events have taken place across Scotland, including the Highlands and the Borders.

The first 12,500 results are now being assessed. A second phase is due to begin in August, with another 12,500 men expected to take part. Further events are planned in areas including the Isle of Lewis and Fife.

The programme starts with a prostate-specific antigen blood test. Men considered to be at higher risk may then receive more advanced diagnostic testing. This approach is intended to improve accuracy by combining PSA testing with a broader assessment of individual risk. Relevant factors can include age, family history, ethnicity and clinical indicators.

The first phase has already identified cancers at different stages, including stage 4 disease. Some men had reported no symptoms before testing. This highlights the difficulty of detecting prostate cancer early. The disease can develop without clear warning signs, which increases the risk of diagnosis at a later stage.

The programme also addresses uneven access to PSA testing. Men can pay for testing privately, but access through general practice may vary. The Scottish initiative creates a structured route for testing while generating evidence on how a wider detection programme could operate.

Demand has been stronger than expected. Testing has been spread across the year so that the process and results can be reviewed carefully. Businesses with mainly male workforces have encouraged staff to attend, while organisations including Police Scotland are supporting future events.

The programme could contribute to future decisions on prostate cancer screening. Current policy has generally favoured targeted testing rather than universal screening because PSA tests can produce uncertain results when used alone. By combining PSA testing with more advanced diagnostic tools, the initiative is testing a more focused model. The aim is to identify higher-risk men earlier while reducing unnecessary procedures.

EDX Medical Group plc (LON:EDX) is a UK-based listed company focused on the development of diagnostic tests that enable personalised treatment for cancer, cardiovascular and infectious diseases.
