EDX Medical is gaining relevance in the UK prostate cancer screening debate as Sir Chris Hoy calls for nationwide testing following his stage four cancer diagnosis.
Hoy, a six-time Olympic gold medallist, revealed in 2024 that his prostate cancer had spread to his bones. Since then, he has pushed for earlier and wider screening, bringing greater attention to the weaknesses of current diagnostic methods and the need for more accurate testing.
EDX Medical is directly involved in that area through the work of Professor Sir Chris Evans and other researchers developing non-invasive prostate cancer tests. The tests are targeting sensitivity and specificity of between 96% and 99%.
That level of accuracy is important because one of the main barriers to broader prostate screening in the UK is the performance of existing prostate-specific antigen testing. The UK National Screening Committee does not currently recommend routine PSA screening for men without symptoms, partly because false-positive results can lead to unnecessary biopsies and further procedures.
More accurate testing could change the risk-benefit calculation.
If EDX Medical and its research partners can demonstrate that new diagnostic methods reliably reduce false positives while identifying cancers earlier, the technology could become more relevant to future screening policy.
Hoy is also helping generate data that could influence the screening debate. In March 2026, he launched the Scottish Prostate Cancer Initiative in Glasgow, offering free PSA testing to 25,000 men aged between 40 and 80 across Scotland.
The programme is intended to identify abnormalities before symptoms develop and provide further evidence on the value of proactive screening. It is supported by former rugby international Kenny Logan and businessman Sir Tom Hunter.
