Drax has been recognised for its partnership with Energy Sparks, which is helping schools cut energy costs, reduce emissions and improve climate education. The three-year collaboration won the Third Sector Business Charity Award for Best Response to the Cost of Living Crisis, giving Drax a clear example of measurable social impact linked to energy efficiency.
The programme is funded through the Drax Foundation and supports schools in underserved communities. Since 2023, Drax has worked with Energy Sparks to give schools access to energy management tools, data analysis, resources and education programmes. The aim is simple: help schools understand where energy is being used, reduce waste and lower bills.
Funding provided this year means 150 schools can use Energy Sparks’ tools and programmes at no cost. The initiative is expected to reach up to 50,000 children. During the 2025/26 school year, participating schools are expected to save more than £1 million in energy bills and cut CO2 emissions by 1,500 tonnes.
Schools are under pressure from higher operating costs, and energy is one area where better data and simple changes can produce savings. By backing a programme with clear financial and environmental outcomes, Drax is showing how targeted community investment can support cost control, emissions reduction and stronger local relationships.
Energy affordability and decarbonisation remain central issues for households, businesses and public services. A programme that helps schools reduce bills while teaching pupils about energy use gives Drax a positive, practical example of its contribution beyond power generation.
Drax Group plc (LON:DRX), trading as Drax, is a power generation business. The principal downstream enterprises are based in the UK and include Drax Power Limited, which runs the biomass fuelled Drax power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire.
