Drax expands its role in the UK’s flexible power system

The UK electricity system is entering a new phase in which flexibility is becoming increasingly important alongside generation capacity. Rising renewable power, growing electricity demand and greater pressure on the grid are changing how supply and demand need to be managed, creating a broader requirement for technologies that can respond as conditions shift.

Renewable generation is playing a larger role in the electricity mix, but its variability means the system must be able to balance periods of stronger and weaker output. At the same time, electrification is increasing demand while new technologies and infrastructure place additional requirements on the network. The result is a more complex operating environment in which the ability to adjust supply, storage and consumption can influence reliability, resilience and system costs.

Flexibility can come from several sources. These include dispatchable and renewable generation, battery and long-duration energy storage, transmission infrastructure, smart energy management and platforms that optimise electricity demand and supply in real time. Rather than relying on one technology, the system increasingly requires a combination of assets capable of responding over different timescales.

This developing requirement is relevant to Drax Group’s strategic positioning. The company has been moving beyond its historical focus on a predominantly single technology towards a broader role as a provider of system flexibility. Its investment activity now includes open cycle gas turbines, battery energy storage systems and renewable generation, giving it exposure to several of the technologies intended to support a more responsive electricity network.

The shift also reflects wider concerns around energy security. Recent geopolitical disruption has demonstrated how international energy markets can be affected by events outside the UK. Greater domestic generation combined with improved system flexibility has the potential to reduce exposure to those pressures while supporting more efficient use of available electricity infrastructure.

Artificial intelligence and data centres illustrate the scale of the challenge. The UK Government forecasts that the country will require at least 6GW of AI-capable data centre capacity by 2030, around three times current capacity. Data centre electricity demand can also move rapidly as computing workloads increase, pause and restart. Meeting that requirement therefore involves more than simply adding generation. It also increases the value of infrastructure capable of responding dynamically to changing demand.

The same principle applies across other areas of economic development. Advanced manufacturing, healthcare technologies, automation and digital infrastructure all depend on reliable electricity. A system that can adapt to more variable demand and supply could therefore influence how quickly new industries and technologies can expand and the cost at which that expansion takes place.

Alongside its existing flexible generation assets, Drax’s recommended offer for Bluefield Solar Income Fund has the potential to add approximately 900MW of solar and wind generation. If the offer is accepted, Drax says its combined portfolio of flexible generation assets could exceed 3GW of power capacity.
