Quicklime is widely used across heavy industry, construction, agriculture and processing because it is highly reactive, effective and relatively low-cost. Although it is a simple material, it performs several important functions that help industrial processes run efficiently.

One of its main uses is in steel production. Steelmakers use quicklime as a fluxing agent to remove impurities from molten metal. It reacts with materials such as silica, phosphorus and sulphur, helping form slag that can be separated from the steel.

Quicklime is also commonly used in mining. It can support ore extraction, control pH levels and help neutralise acidic mine drainage. These functions make it useful in both mineral processing and site management. Because mining operations often need to control chemical conditions carefully, quicklime provides a practical way to manage acidity and improve processing conditions.

Water treatment is another major application. Quicklime is used to adjust pH and can also help remove sediments and other unwanted materials from water. Its chemical properties allow treatment plants to improve water quality and maintain suitable conditions during processing.

In construction, quicklime has several uses. It can be slaked and used in hot mixed mortar for building work, while it is also used for soil stabilisation. When added to suitable soils, quicklime can improve strength and reduce instability, making the ground better suited for roads, foundations and other construction projects.

Agriculture also uses lime-based materials to improve soil conditions. Quicklime can help reduce soil acidity and create better growing conditions for crops. By adjusting soil chemistry, it can support more effective use of nutrients and contribute to improved productivity.

Sugar refining is another established use. Sugar mills use quicklime during the purification process to help clarify raw juice and remove unwanted impurities. It can also support the decolourisation process, helping producers achieve a cleaner final product.
