Trifast’s TR Fastenings business is developing a range of fasteners made from 100% recycled nylon as demand grows for lower-impact components across lighting, power, data and water infrastructure.
Sustainable plastics are still heavily concentrated in single-use products, while engineered components such as fasteners have received less attention. TR is targeting that opportunity with recycled materials designed to retain the strength and durability needed for industrial use.
Its development programme has included material research, moulding trials, mechanical testing and accelerated heat ageing. The recycled nylon being assessed comes from waste sources including textiles, fishing nets and automotive airbags.
TR says selected recycled nylon materials can achieve around 80% to 90% of the mechanical strength of virgin-grade plastics. In some tests, the materials met or exceeded the performance levels required for the intended application.
According to TR, the recycled nylon can cut raw material carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by up to 90% compared with prime-grade alternatives.
The company has already tested the material across a range of products, including cable ties, snap rivets, drive fasteners, fir tree clips, threaded spacers and wire clips. These components can be used in areas such as data cabling, control systems and infrastructure enclosures.
Manufactured samples are now available for customer testing, while TR is looking for partners for collaboration and pilot programmes.
