Sintana Energy is expanding its African exploration portfolio with new exposure in Namibia and Angola, adding acreage in two established petroleum regions and increasing the number of projects that could generate future drilling activity.
In Namibia, Sintana has acquired a 44% interest in Maravilla Oil and Gas. Maravilla owns 80% of Paragon, which holds a 100% operated interest in Petroleum Exploration Licence 37 in the Walvis Basin. The structure gives Sintana an indirect interest of about 35% in PEL 37.
PEL 37 covers approximately 17,295 square kilometres offshore Namibia, in water depths of about 100 to 1,500 metres. Several identified prospects are in shallower water of roughly 300 to 600 metres and include large fan structures associated with an oil-prone Aptian source rock.
The licence already has a substantial technical database. This includes around 2,813 square kilometres of 3D seismic, approximately 1,000 line kilometres of 2D seismic and data from previous drilling. Sintana and its partners can use that existing information to refine targets and determine where future exploration spending should be focused.
The acquisition also strengthens Sintana’s position in the Walvis Basin. The company already has a 10% indirect interest in PEL 82, which sits north of PEL 37 and is operated by a Chevron affiliate. Around 70% of PEL 82 is covered by 3D seismic, and previous wells in the area have provided evidence of light oil.
Sintana is also moving into Angola through definitive agreements linked to Block KON-16 in the onshore Kwanza Basin. The transaction gives the company another exploration position outside Namibia and adds exposure to a separate geological setting.
The Angola move broadens the company’s risk profile. Namibia remains a major part of Sintana’s strategy, but the addition of KON-16 reduces reliance on a single country or basin. It also creates another potential source of exploration milestones as technical work advances.
Together, the Namibia and Angola transactions show a clear portfolio strategy. Sintana is building interests in prospective acreage while generally avoiding the need to operate every project directly.
The main value drivers now are execution and timing. In Namibia, further technical work on PEL 37 and activity on nearby licences could improve understanding of the basin and help define drilling priorities. In Angola, progress on KON-16 could add another stream of exploration activity.
