Seafarer safety becomes a bigger maritime risk issue

The 2026 Day of the Seafarer campaign put seafarer safety at the centre of the maritime risk discussion. Under the theme ‘Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks’, the campaign highlighted the fact that global trade depended on crews who often worked in difficult, dangerous and unpredictable conditions.

Seafarers moved the goods, commodities, food, medicine and energy that supported the global economy, but they also carried the personal risk when trade routes were affected by conflict, instability or security threats.

The campaign pointed to the pressure faced by crews in high-risk and conflict-affected areas. Recent events in the Strait of Hormuz were used to show how seafarers could be left stranded far from home while still supporting the movement of essential cargoes. This was a clear reminder that disruption at sea was not only about vessels, cargo and routes, it was also about the people required to keep those operations running.

Unsafe conditions could affect voyage planning, routing, timing and cost. Where crews faced higher risk, companies could also face higher operational complexity and greater pressure to show that safety standards were being met.

The campaign also called on governments, industry participants, shipowners and other maritime stakeholders to protect seafarers, uphold labour standards, respect international law and support safety at sea.

For shipping companies, port operators, charterers and maritime service providers, the issue was practical. A safer and better supported workforce helped reduce disruption risk and supported continuity across trade routes. Poor crew protection, by contrast, could create delays, reputational risk and added pressure on operations.
