Quadrise and Licella have amended their joint development agreement to move their low-carbon marine fuel programme towards engine testing.
The revised agreement sets out the next stages for assessing Licella bio-oil as a feedstock for Quadrise’s bioMSAR and bioMSAR Zero fuels. The companies have been working together since March 2025 and have now defined a more specific testing sequence following laboratory work in Australia and the UK.
The next step is further laboratory testing of refined Licella bio-oils during the second half of 2026. If successful, the programme is expected to move into initial marine diesel engine pilot testing. That would be followed by larger-scale third-party engine testing before any commercial vessel trial could be considered.
The staged approach gives Quadrise a clearer route to technical validation while limiting the need for larger commitments before the fuel combination has passed earlier testing. Each phase is intended to establish whether Licella’s bio-oil can be used effectively within Quadrise’s marine fuel technology.
Licella’s Cat-HTR process converts biomass residues and biowastes into bio-oil. Quadrise is assessing whether that material can provide a suitable lower-carbon feedstock for its existing fuel platform.
Under the amended arrangement, Licella will provide expertise in hydrothermal liquefaction and bio-oil production, while Quadrise will contribute its fuel technology and marine sector experience.
