Quadrise’s MSAR and bioMSAR technologies convert oil residues, renewable components, water and specialist additives into stable oil-in-water emulsion fuels. The production process creates very small fuel droplets, which are designed to improve combustion and support more efficient fuel use.
The shipping industry needs lower-carbon fuels that can be introduced without major changes to vessels, ports or supply systems. Quadrise says its modular production technology can be installed in less than 12 months and integrated with existing fuel oil and biofuel infrastructure. That could reduce the time and capital required to move from testing into commercial use.
MSAR is produced by combining refinery residues with water and additives before processing the mixture through Quadrise’s proprietary emulsion equipment. bioMSAR adds a renewable component, such as renewable glycerine, to reduce the fuel’s carbon intensity. The two products can be manufactured using the same equipment and used interchangeably, giving customers flexibility as fuel requirements and renewable feedstock availability change.
Quadrise is also widening the range of potential renewable inputs available to its platform. Under a joint development agreement with Alder Renewables, the companies are evaluating Alder Pyrolysis Sugars as a feedstock for bioMSAR and bioMSAR Zero.
Alder produces the renewable intermediate from sustainable biomass through its pyrolysis oil upgrading process. The development programme begins with laboratory testing at Quadrise’s UK research facility, followed by small-scale diesel engine trials. If those stages are successful, the companies plan to move towards full-scale marine engine testing.
The staged structure limits technical risk by requiring the fuel to meet defined testing steps before larger trials begin. It also gives Quadrise a route to assess whether Alder’s biomass-derived material can support a scalable marine fuel with a lower carbon profile.
