Quadrise achieves key MSAR® and bioMSAR™ testing milestone in Panama

Quadrise

Quadrise plc (LON:QED), the technology company focused on the decarbonisation of shipping and heavy industry through deployment of low emission fuels and biofuels, has announced the successful completion of proof-of-concept and emissions testing programmes for its MSAR® and bioMSAR™ fuels at the Sparkle Power SA plant in El Giral, Panama.

These trials mark the first successful application of MSAR® and bioMSAR™ on Everllence (formerly MAN Energy Solutions) 4-stroke engines, expanding the commercial potential of these fuels across additional engine types in energy-intensive sectors seeking cost-effective decarbonisation solutions.

Testing on MSAR® and bioMSAR™ fuels was conducted over a 24 hour period on an Everllence 18V32/40 8MW engine. A subsequent shorter run was completed on a Everllence 9L28/32 4MW engine. The trials were conducted by experts from Quadrise and Sparkle, and supported by independent specialists in external engine performance, emissions and fuel testing.

The key success criteria of the main trial were met as follows:

·    Engine efficiency was improved, consistent with results on Wärtsilä diesel engines.

·    NOx emissions were reduced by 25% with bioMSAR and 32% with MSAR®.

·    Particulate matter emissions were reduced by 20% using both fuels.

The Sparkle trials validated the expected performance of MSAR® and bioMSAR™ for commercial deployment and confirmed the fuel injection system modifications required to achieve maximum load. The parties are now jointly planning the next steps towards confirming commercial supply arrangements for Sparkle and fuel permitting in Panama.

Jason Miles, Chief Technology Officer of Quadrise, commented:

The successful trials with Sparkle represent a significant milestone for Quadrise, demonstrating the viability of MSAR® and bioMSAR™ on Everllence 4-stroke engines through a strong collaborative endeavour. With confirmed improvements in engine efficiency and emissions, we look forward to advancing discussions with Sparkle and a regional supply partner to establish a commercial supply facility serving the power and marine sectors across Central America.”

Jose Castillo, General Manager of Sparkle, commented:

“We are delighted to have completed the Everllence engine test of MSAR® and bioMSAR™ at our power plant. The Quadrise test has confirmed the fuels are viable replacements for heavy fuel oil at our facility.

Sparkle Power is committed to becoming more fuel efficient and conserving the environment by reducing emissions in accordance with the government’s policies for environmental conservation in Panama. The test has confirmed that MSAR® and bioMSAR™ fuels can achieve the necessary criteria for commercial implementation in the country.”
