Matchtech Expands Female Talent Pipeline in Defence

Gattaca Plc

Matchtech is focusing on attracting, retaining and progressing more women across the defence sector as employers face growing demand for specialist engineering, technology and technical skills.

The recruitment specialist says building a stronger female talent pipeline requires action across the full employment journey, from making defence careers more accessible and attractive through to providing clearer routes for progression and leadership.

The issue is becoming increasingly relevant as defence organisations compete for skilled workers across engineering, technology and other specialist disciplines. Matchtech’s focus is on helping employers widen the pool of potential candidates while addressing barriers that can prevent women from entering or progressing within the sector.

Flexible working is one area highlighted by the company. Greater access to part-time and flexible roles can help employers retain experienced professionals while making defence careers more accessible to people who may otherwise leave the industry or choose a different sector.

Matchtech also points to the importance of career development. Attracting female candidates is only one part of building a sustainable workforce. Employers also need to create opportunities for employees to develop their skills, take on greater responsibility and progress into senior positions.

The company’s own recruitment business provides an example of the change it says can be achieved. Female representation within its Defence recruitment team has increased from 10% in 2008 to 62% today. Matchtech is using this experience as part of its wider work with defence organisations on recruitment and workforce development.

Matchtech has also become a partner of the Women in Defence Charter, which has an ambition of reaching 30% female representation across the UK defence sector by 2030. The partnership involves a focus on recruitment practices, measuring progress and workplace conditions that support longer-term careers.

Employers need to consider how roles are designed, how talent is identified and how employees are supported once they join. This includes providing development opportunities and creating working environments that encourage people to remain within the sector.
