Alternative marine fuels strengthen the case for Quadrise’s technology

Quadrise plc

Shipping is under clear pressure to cut emissions while keeping vessels commercially competitive. Stricter environmental rules and rising demand for lower-carbon operations are pushing shipowners, shipyards, ports and fuel suppliers to invest in new marine fuel solutions. Maritime transport is moving away from reliance on conventional fuel oil and towards a more diverse mix of cleaner fuels.

That shift is creating demand for practical technologies that can reduce emissions, work within existing operations and give vessel operators more fuel flexibility. Quadrise is directly relevant to this transition through its emulsion fuel technology, which is designed to produce lower-cost, lower-emission alternatives to conventional heavy fuel oil.

Green methanol, ammonia, hydrogen and biofuels are all being considered as future marine fuels. Green methanol is already one of the more advanced options, with methanol-powered vessels entering service or being ordered. Ammonia could remove carbon emissions at the point of use, but it still needs further technology development and strong safety systems. Hydrogen is more likely to play a longer-term role, especially for short-sea shipping and smaller vessels, as production and infrastructure expand.

Different vessel types, trade routes and ports will need different solutions. Owners and operators need to manage regulation, cost, fuel availability and infrastructure risk while keeping vessels in service and commercially useful.

Quadrise’s technology addresses practical fuel challenges today, while also supporting the longer-term move towards cleaner marine fuels. Its MSAR technology produces a low-viscosity oil-in-water emulsified synthetic fuel oil or biofuel by mixing heavy residual oils with small amounts of specialist chemicals and water to a bespoke formulation. The emulsion contains around 30% water and less than 1% chemicals.

Quadrise has also developed bioMSAR, using the same core technology while replacing some fossil content and water with waste-based renewable biofuels. These renewable biofuels can be oil or water soluble.

Quadrise plc (LON:QED) is an energy technology provider whose solutions enable production of cheaper, cleaner, simpler and safer alternatives to fuel oil and biofuels, proven in real world applications. Quadrise technologies produce transition fuels called MSAR® and bioMSAR™, which allow clients in the shipping, utilities and industrial sectors to reduce carbon emissions whilst also saving costs.
