Why quick lime remains a strategic industrial input across multiple sectors

Firering Strategic Minerals plc

Quick lime, chemically known as calcium oxide, occupies a distinctive position in industrial supply chains due to its chemical reactivity and strong alkaline properties. Produced by heating limestone at high temperatures to remove carbon dioxide, the resulting compound has become an essential input across numerous heavy industries and environmental processes. Its ability to regulate pH levels, remove impurities and support chemical reactions makes it a foundational material in several large-scale production systems.

One of the most significant areas of demand for quick lime lies in metallurgical operations, particularly in the production of iron and steel. In these processes, quick lime acts as a flux that reacts with impurities such as silica, phosphorus and sulphur present in molten metal. The reaction forms a slag that separates from the molten steel, allowing unwanted elements to be removed efficiently. This step is central to achieving the chemical purity required for commercial steel production and maintaining consistent product quality.

Quick lime also plays an important role in the pulp and paper industry. During chemical recovery operations in pulp production, it is used in the causticising process, where it reacts with sodium carbonate to regenerate sodium hydroxide. This regenerated chemical is then reused in the pulping process to separate cellulose fibres from lignin in wood. It is also used in bleaching and water treatment stages within paper mills, where it helps improve paper brightness and manage process water quality.

Firering Strategic Minerals plc (LON:FRG) is an emerging quicklime producer and critical minerals explorer, with operations in Zambia and West Africa.
