Sintana Energy is expanding its African exploration portfolio through its partnership with Corsel in Angola, targeting significant oil potential in the underexplored Kwanza Basin.
CEO Robert Bose described the Con 16 opportunity as a combination of an established petroleum region and decades of limited exploration investment. The basin previously supported nine producing fields, while the last onshore exploration well was drilled in the 1980s.
The Con 16 prospect could contain an estimated 400 million barrels of recoverable resource across pre-salt and post-salt formations, based on the potential to replicate comparable geological formations. Bose highlighted the potential scale of the opportunity alongside an estimated exploration well cost of US$20 million, considerably below the cost of drilling a comparable offshore well. These figures represent potential resources rather than a confirmed discovery.
The next milestone is a 2D seismic acquisition programme expected to begin shortly and finish in early 2027. The resulting data will help refine the prospect and support discussions with potential partners to fund and participate in an exploration well, which the company hopes to drill in 2027.
Sintana is also progressing its interests in Namibia, where its portfolio includes assets in the Orange and Walvis basins. The Mopane discovery has strengthened the company’s confidence in the region’s exploration potential and encouraged it to expand its opportunities into Angola.
Bose said portfolio diversification is central to Sintana’s strategy. By holding interests across different basins, exploration stages and operating partnerships, the company aims to retain exposure to potentially significant discoveries without concentrating its capital in a single project. It generally works alongside experienced operators, allowing partners to lead operational activities while Sintana deploys capital into early-stage opportunities.
