Sintana Energy advances key Latin American exploration plans

Sintana Energy

Sintana Energy has secured more time for exploration work offshore Uruguay and moved closer to competing for a new offshore permit in Argentina.

The company’s AREA OFF-1 exploration timetable in Uruguay has been extended by one year. The initial exploration period will now expire on 23 August 2027, giving operator Chevron additional time to complete and assess a planned 3D seismic programme.

The extension was requested after delays in receiving environmental approval for the seismic survey. Approval was granted in early 2026, allowing Chevron to complete the first season of data acquisition by the end of April. A second acquisition season is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Once the survey is complete, the data will need to be processed and interpreted before the partners can decide whether to move towards drilling. The revised deadline reduces pressure on the programme and allows that decision to be based on a more complete technical picture.

Offshore drilling requires significant capital and careful planning. Additional seismic coverage can help the partners identify potential targets, assess geological risk and decide whether a well is justified. The extension therefore protects the value of the licence while keeping the next stage dependent on technical results.

Progress is also being made in Argentina. Sintana affiliate Challenger Energy Group previously submitted an expression of interest covering the CAN-200 offshore area in the North Argentine Basin. The Argentine authorities have now launched an international public tender for the permit.

Challenger intends to participate in the tender process. A successful bid would expand Sintana’s exposure to another offshore basin in Latin America, although the company must first complete the competitive process and meet the relevant regulatory requirements.

The Argentine opportunity remains at an earlier stage than the Uruguay programme. No exploration permit has yet been awarded, and any future technical work will depend on the tender outcome. Even so, the launch of the process gives Sintana a defined route to pursue the acreage rather than relying on an informal expression of interest.

Sintana Energy Inc (TSX-V:SEI, OTCQX:SEUSF) is a public oil and natural gas exploration company listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange.
