RM positions online safety offering around new UK digital safeguarding requirements

The UK Government’s response to the Growing up in the Online World consultation sets out measures including stronger default protections for 16- and 17-year-olds on social media, restrictions on potentially addictive online features and additional safeguards around AI chatbots. The measures also place greater emphasis on digital resilience, healthier online habits and practical support for families.

For RM, the policy direction increases the importance of products and services designed to help schools manage online safeguarding and meet changing compliance requirements. The company is using its existing position in education technology to support schools as expectations around filtering, monitoring and online safety develop.

A central part of that offering is RM SafetyNet, its web filtering software for education. The system is designed to block harmful content and alert school staff to potential safeguarding risks. RM is also using direct safeguarding experience within its product team to inform the continued development of the platform as online risks change.

The company works with organisations including the Internet Watch Foundation and the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit and supports the UK Safer Internet Centre. These relationships are intended to help RM keep its safeguarding approach aligned with wider online safety practices.

RM is also extending its approach beyond school technology infrastructure. The company runs online safety webinars for parents of primary and secondary school pupils, covering areas such as screen time, gaming platforms, social media, digital footprints and online habits.

Government policy increasingly treats online safety as a shared responsibility between schools, technology providers and families. By supporting both school staff and parents, RM is seeking to strengthen its role within the wider safeguarding framework rather than relying solely on software provision.

RM plc (LON:RM) is a global EdTech provider of learning and assessment solutions, supporting the full learning journey, from early years through to higher education and professional qualifications.
