Quicklime is a widely used industrial material with applications across steel production, construction, mining, water treatment, emissions control, pulp and paper manufacturing and soil improvement. Its role in essential operating processes gives the material relevance across several established industries.
Also known as calcium oxide, quicklime is produced by heating crushed limestone to about 1,100 degrees Celsius in a shaft furnace or rotary kiln. This process releases carbon dioxide from the limestone and leaves calcium oxide. The quicklime is then crushed and ground into different sizes to meet specific processing and delivery requirements.
The quality of the limestone, the production method and the level of process control all affect the finished product. Manufacturers can produce quicklime with different levels of reactivity, purity and particle size. This allows the material to be adapted for customers that require fast chemical reactions, controlled handling or consistent performance in large-scale industrial systems.
Steelmaking is one of the main markets for quicklime. The material is used to remove impurities during production, making reliable quality and supply important to plant operations. Quicklime is also used in mining and metals processing, where its chemical properties can support treatment and recovery processes.
Environmental applications provide another broad source of demand. Quicklime can adjust the pH of water and waste streams, reduce the solubility of certain metals and support flue gas treatment. These uses connect demand to water management, industrial emissions control and the treatment of contaminated materials.
In construction and infrastructure, quicklime is used to dry and stabilise wet soil. It can reduce soil plasticity, limit shrinkage and swelling, and improve resistance to changing weather conditions. This can make difficult ground more suitable for roads, foundations and other construction work. Different product sizes are available depending on the required reaction speed, dust level and application equipment.
Firering Strategic Minerals plc (LON:FRG) is an emerging quicklime producer and critical minerals explorer, with operations in Zambia and West Africa.
