MeyGen is building a larger tidal energy project in Scotland’s Pentland Firth from an operating base that has already demonstrated years of subsea generation. The project is located in the Inner Sound between the Scottish mainland and the island of Stroma. Its first phase uses four underwater tidal turbines with a combined capacity of six megawatts.
The significance of MeyGen is now increasingly about scale. The current array provides operating experience, while the wider project has been structured to support a much larger development over time.
Tidal power has one clear advantage over weather-dependent renewable generation. Tidal cycles can be predicted far in advance, providing greater visibility over when electricity will be generated. This makes tidal power potentially useful alongside other renewable technologies where output is less predictable.
MeyGen has also provided evidence around one of the main commercial challenges facing tidal energy: maintenance.
Underwater turbines operate in difficult conditions, and retrieving or servicing equipment can add cost and operational risk. One MeyGen turbine operated for more than six years underwater without requiring disruptive maintenance. That operating record is important because longer periods between major interventions could improve the economics of future tidal projects.
The project’s phased structure also limits the need to commit capital to full-scale development before the technology has been tested in operating conditions. Early turbines generate information on reliability, maintenance requirements and site performance that can be used when planning later phases. That reduces some of the technical uncertainty attached to expansion.
MeyGen’s development plans have contemplated capacity of up to 400 megawatts at the Pentland Firth site, potentially involving hundreds of turbines. The gap between the existing six-megawatt array and that longer-term ambition highlights both the opportunity and the execution challenge.
Expansion will require additional turbines, infrastructure and capital, while continued reliability will remain important to controlling operating costs. The economics of larger-scale tidal power will therefore depend on whether the performance demonstrated by the existing array can be maintained as deployment increases.
The Pentland Firth has strong tidal flows and is close enough to the Scottish mainland to support access to grid infrastructure. MeyGen has been developed specifically around these conditions rather than adapting a conventional renewable project to a marine location. The existing turbines therefore serve two purposes. They generate renewable electricity today, while also providing operating evidence for decisions about future phases.
