Matchtech targets a critical workforce constraint in UK renewables

The expansion of renewable energy infrastructure is creating a significant workforce challenge across the UK, increasing the need for scalable recruitment services, specialist talent networks and more effective workforce planning.

Global renewable energy employment is projected to reach 30 million jobs by 2030, nearly double the current workforce of 16.6 million. At the same time, more than half of the energy companies, unions and education providers surveyed by the International Energy Agency have reported critical recruitment bottlenecks. This combination of rapid market expansion and constrained labour supply is placing greater pressure on companies responsible for delivering complex energy projects.

The challenge is particularly pronounced in the UK wind sector. Its workforce is expected to increase from approximately 55,000 people to more than 112,000 by 2030 to support national clean power targets. Once normal staff turnover is included, the wider UK power sector will need to recruit around 22,400 people each year.

Current recruitment trends suggest that demand may continue to exceed supply. The UK wind industry is projected to face a shortfall of more than 37,000 workers by 2030. Offshore wind employment has already increased from 32,000 in 2023 to 40,000 in 2025, demonstrating the pace at which employers must build their operational capacity.

These labour requirements create both delivery and financial risks for renewable energy businesses. Delays in filling engineering, technical and project management roles can affect construction schedules, increase recruitment costs and place additional pressure on existing employees. The need to recruit across several locations at the same time can also overwhelm internal talent acquisition teams, particularly when projects require specialist skills that are already in limited supply.
