Lime’s core role in metal production

Firering Strategic Minerals plc

Lime is a key input in metal production. Its importance lies in the fact that it is used across several major industrial processes, including steelmaking, iron ore pelletising, non-ferrous metal refining and refractory manufacturing.

In steelmaking, lime is mainly used to remove impurities. High-calcium lime and dolomitic lime help separate silica, phosphorus and sulphur from molten metal. This improves the quality of finished steel and helps producers meet tighter product specifications.

Lime is also important in electric arc furnaces and basic oxygen furnaces, where it helps form slag. Slag captures unwanted materials and protects furnace equipment during processing. Better slag control can reduce operating problems, support furnace performance and limit wear on expensive assets.

In iron ore pellet production, lime helps improve the strength and quality of pellets before they enter the furnace. This supports smoother steel production and better raw material use.

Lime is also used in copper, gold and other non-ferrous metal processing. It helps control pH and supports the separation of valuable minerals from waste material. This can improve recovery rates and give operators better control over processing conditions.

Another important use is in refractory products. Dolomitic lime is used to make materials that line furnaces, ladles and other high-temperature equipment. These linings protect industrial assets from heat and corrosion, helping reduce downtime and maintenance risk.

Firering Strategic Minerals plc (LON:FRG) is an emerging quicklime producer and critical minerals explorer, with operations in Zambia and West Africa.
