LAICA, the Italian water filtration company, developed its proprietary Bi‑Flux® technology to carve out a differentiated position in the home filtration segment. The system was designed to improve tap water through a structured, multi-stage process that reduced contaminants while intentionally preserving naturally occurring minerals.
At the core of Bi‑Flux® was a patented five-layer cartridge that combined mechanical filtration with activated carbon sourced from coconut shells and ion exchange resin. This composition enabled the filter to reduce chlorine, heavy metals, herbicides and limescale. Unlike many conventional systems, it was engineered to retain minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium.
The product strategy reflected broader shifts in consumer behaviour. Rather than focus solely on elimination of impurities, LAICA framed Bi‑Flux® as a balanced solution for those who wished to avoid bottled water but still preferred a reliable alternative to untreated tap water.
Bi‑Flux® cartridges are compatible with various LAICA filter jugs and designed for monthly replacement, offering up to 150 litres of filtered water per cartridge under typical conditions. The filters were produced in Italy and available in several versions tailored to regional water characteristics, enabling the company to offer a more localised solution without altering the core design.
