James Cropper uses technical expertise to support premium paper demand

James Cropper

James Cropper says its technical expertise allows it to produce premium paper that combines distinctive design with reliable performance at commercial scale.

The company develops specialist papers for applications including luxury packaging, premium printing and branded materials. Its work involves turning a customer’s design brief into paper that can be manufactured consistently and used without creating avoidable production problems.

A customer may ask James Cropper to match a specific brand colour, reproduce a shade found in nature or create a particular texture and finish. The company must then determine how to achieve that appearance while ensuring the paper remains suitable for printing, folding, finishing, packing and retail use. This requires knowledge of fibres, dyes, pigments, colour chemistry, sheet formation, surface behaviour, strength, weight and thickness. These factors affect both the appearance of the paper and its performance during production.

The technical requirements can become more demanding when customers choose dark or uncoated papers. These materials are often harder to print using traditional offset methods. Additional processes, such as printing a white base layer, may be needed to reproduce CMYK designs accurately.

Texture and coatings can also affect the final result. A tactile varnish may change the appearance of the paper itself or alter the colours printed on it. A surface designed to feel distinctive must still allow the material to fold, print and withstand normal handling.

James Cropper plc (LON:CRPR) is a market leader in Advanced Materials and Paper & Packaging. The Group’s Advanced Materials products incorporate pioneering nonwovens and electrochemical coatings for its customers globally, including components in fuel cells and hydrogen electrolysis.
