James Cropper is using its specialist knowledge of paper, colour and fibre-based materials to strengthen its role in premium creative and packaging markets.
The company has produced coloured paper since 1856 and has built technical expertise around fibres, dyes, water chemistry, temperature and pulp composition. That knowledge allows it to manufacture papers and fibre products where colour consistency, texture, weight and physical performance are important to the final application.
James Cropper’s work increasingly involves collaboration with designers, artists and brands that require materials developed for specific creative or technical purposes. That can give the company a more specialised position than standard paper manufacturing and create opportunities in applications where product quality and material identity are closely linked.
Recent projects show how this approach works in practice.
Papercraft artist Nathan Ward used James Cropper paper and Moulded Fibre for a three-dimensional diorama. The project required paper sheets and bespoke fibre components to match in colour, demonstrating the company’s ability to control appearance across different material formats.
Designer Edeline Lee used Coloursource papers for a 15-year anniversary book presented at London Fashion Week 2026. Different paper weights and tones were selected to vary texture and opacity through the publication. In this case, the material formed part of the design itself rather than simply providing a surface for print.
James Cropper has also demonstrated the structural properties of its paper through Steve Messam’s Paperbridge project. The installation used 20,000 sheets of 270gsm paper to create a self-supporting bridge across a Lake District stream without glue or fixings. The material was selected for its colour and ability to perform outdoors, then returned to James Cropper for recycling after the project.
The company’s materials have also been used by artist Helen Musselwhite for layered paper artworks and by Kyla McCallum of Foldability as part of James Cropper’s rebrand.
Bruichladdich commissioned a Moulded Fibre wrap for its Luxury Re/defined range, combining bottle protection with the visual and tactile requirements of premium presentation.
These projects point to a business model built around material expertise, customisation and close involvement in the design process. That positioning can reduce exposure to purely commodity-led competition where price is the main differentiator.
