India is undergoing a decisive shift in its energy landscape, with smart metering and digital infrastructure taking centre stage in efforts to build a more efficient, transparent and future-ready electricity system. Supported by the government’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), this transformation is gathering pace and creating strong foundations for long-term gains across the power value chain.
The installation of over 5.28 crore smart meters by the end of 2025 marks a major milestone for the RDSS, covering 45 power distribution companies across 28 states and union territories. These meters are designed not only to reduce inefficiencies such as aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses but also to improve service quality for end-users. Faster fault detection, remote disconnection, accurate billing and streamlined operations are already becoming evident in early deployment zones.
Prepaid smart meters, in particular, are reshaping the financial dynamics of power distribution companies (DISCOMs) by enabling real-time billing and upfront payments. This is helping to strengthen balance sheets, reduce debt exposure and unlock capital for infrastructure expansion. Meanwhile, consumers benefit from more visibility and control over their usage via mobile apps that allow recharges, monitor consumption and issue alerts, key features that are becoming increasingly popular among digitally savvy users.
