CyanConnode is expanding the role of its smart metering technology beyond communications, with a stronger focus on helping utilities identify faults earlier, improve field operations and manage networks more efficiently.
Its Omnimesh platform collects operational data from smart meter networks and gives utilities visibility into device health, network performance, communication quality and event patterns. This data can be used to identify potential problems before they develop into larger faults.
The company’s Head-End System and Network Management System monitor endpoints and network behaviour, allowing utilities to detect issues such as unstable devices, repeated communication failures and deteriorating gateway performance. This supports a shift from reacting to faults after they occur to identifying and addressing them sooner.
That change can reduce unnecessary site visits, improve fault prioritisation and limit repeated maintenance work. It also gives CyanConnode a broader role within utility operations, moving its technology closer to day-to-day network management rather than limiting it to meter connectivity.
The company is also linking network data with workforce management systems. The aim is to connect diagnostics with job allocation and completion tracking, creating a more integrated process from fault identification through to field response.
The more meters that are connected, the more important reliable communications, accurate diagnostics and effective field coordination become.
India remains a key market for this strategy, with large-scale smart meter deployment taking place under the RDSS programme. In these projects, reliable communication between meters and utilities is central to billing, consumption monitoring, fault detection and network management.
CyanConnode’s RF mesh technology is designed to support communications in dense and difficult environments. The network can form and adjust automatically, helping maintain data flow when there is interference, a local outage or another disruption. The company is also developing a broader communications model that combines RF mesh, long-range RF and cellular connectivity. Its in-meter gateway is designed to switch between communications methods depending on network conditions.
This could give utilities more flexibility when deploying meters across areas with different coverage and infrastructure requirements. Dense urban locations may be suited to RF mesh, while long-range RF or cellular connections may be more practical in rural or harder-to-reach areas.
