The planned rollout of smart prepaid electricity meters across Goa marks a significant operational milestone in the state’s power distribution modernisation, with implications that extend beyond billing reform into infrastructure positioning and service visibility. The programme, led by the Goa Electricity Department and implemented by DigiSmart Networks Pvt. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of CyanConnode India, is scheduled to begin domestic installations next month following preparatory works at feeder and transformer levels.
Approximately 7.5 lakh conventional domestic meters are due to be replaced in phases, with completion targeted over the coming years. The scale of deployment places the project among the more material state-level smart metering transitions currently underway in India. Importantly, the rollout operates under the framework of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, aligning the initiative with broader national objectives to reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses, improve billing efficiency and enhance transparency across distribution networks.
DigiSmart is not only responsible for meter installation but also for the associated communications backbone and ongoing operations and maintenance under an eight-year service arrangement. This creates multi-year revenue visibility tied to infrastructure rather than one-off equipment supply.
