Emerging markets are attracting renewed interest as improving economic fundamentals, technology investment and stronger corporate balance sheets create opportunities across equities and fixed income.
Despite higher interest rates, currency volatility and geopolitical uncertainty, many emerging economies have demonstrated resilience. Their investment opportunities are also becoming more diverse, extending beyond traditional sectors into artificial intelligence (AI), advanced manufacturing, infrastructure and the energy transition.
Technology is an important source of growth, particularly across Asian markets. Taiwan and South Korea are benefiting from demand for semiconductors, memory chips and AI infrastructure as global technology companies increase capital expenditure. India is also attracting interest through infrastructure investment and domestic economic growth, while China continues to offer opportunities in AI, healthcare, electrification and advanced manufacturing.
Emerging market companies are also becoming more financially disciplined. Stronger balance sheets, improved cash generation and more selective investment decisions are helping some businesses manage higher borrowing costs.
This is particularly relevant as interest rates remain elevated. Companies that rely heavily on external borrowing face greater pressure to refinance debt and fund expansion, while businesses with stronger cash flows and lower debt levels may be better positioned to continue investing.
Tighter financial conditions could also create opportunities for financially stronger companies to gain market share, acquire productive assets and expand as weaker competitors reduce investment or restructure their operations.
This shift towards capital discipline could improve the allocation of resources across emerging economies, supporting productivity and business growth over the longer term.
Emerging market debt is also attracting attention. Many countries have strengthened their monetary frameworks, improved fiscal management and reduced their vulnerability to external financial shocks. These developments have helped the asset class demonstrate greater resilience during periods of global market volatility.
Demand for emerging market bonds has increased, supported by valuations, income opportunities and diversification benefits. Limited new bond issuance could also provide technical support, although higher US interest rates and a stronger dollar remain potential challenges.
