Around 66% of accounts payable teams still manually enter invoice data into their enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, according to 2025 research, highlighting continued challenges with invoice automation.
Although automated invoicing tools are widely available, differences in document formats can prevent systems from processing invoices without manual adjustments. This creates additional work for finance teams and limits the efficiency of automated accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.
EDI PLUS, part of itim, says document compatibility remains a key obstacle to fully automated invoicing. Businesses receive invoices and other transaction documents in different formats, often requiring information to be corrected or standardised before it can enter their systems.
The company reported that only 0.11% of its transactions required manual intervention in 2025, meaning 99.89% were processed without manual input.
Every transaction requiring intervention was traced to a trading partner configuration error. EDI PLUS said its team corrected each issue before it reached the client.
The figures highlight the role of accurate trading partner configuration in maintaining automated transaction processing. While automation can reduce manual data entry, errors in partner settings can still create exceptions that require investigation and correction.
