Ampeak Energy’s MeyGen project in Scotland is demonstrating the potential of tidal stream energy, with 6MW of installed capacity operational and a further 59MW supported by Contracts for Difference.
Located in the Pentland Firth, MeyGen uses underwater turbines to generate electricity from tidal currents. Unlike wind and solar power, tidal generation follows predictable natural cycles, offering a reliable and forecastable source of renewable electricity.
The first phase, comprising four 1.5MW turbines, has been generating power since 2018. The project has a longer-term potential capacity of up to 398MW, subject to further development, investment and approvals.
The additional 59MW has secured Contracts for Difference through allocation rounds four, five and six, with commissioning scheduled between 2027 and 2029.
MeyGen gives Ampeak Energy an established operating project and a platform for further expansion as the tidal energy sector develops. The wider industry continues to face challenges around costs, financing and marine infrastructure, but operational projects are helping build experience and demonstrate the technology’s potential.
