Ampeak Energy is developing the Mey Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Caithness, Scotland, with a planned capacity of up to 300MW and storage capacity of 1,200MWh.
The project will comprise containerised battery units and supporting infrastructure designed to store electricity and help balance supply and demand.
Mey has been selected because of planned expansion in onshore and offshore wind generation, alongside Ampeak Energy’s own tidal stream project. Battery storage could help manage variations in renewable electricity production by storing energy when available and making it available when required.
Ampeak Energy has more than a decade of experience developing and operating energy projects in Mey. The battery storage development builds on the company’s existing presence in the area and adds another project to its energy portfolio.
The project received Section 36 consent from Scottish Ministers, permitting development of the proposed facility. Its capacity of up to 300MW and 1,200MWh represents a large-scale storage installation intended to support the area’s developing renewable energy infrastructure.
