RM highlights the core requirements for scaling digital assessment

RM has set out ten factors that organisations should consider when selecting a digital assessment platform, with security, resilience, integration and scalability emerging as key requirements.

The framework shows that digital assessment is increasingly an infrastructure decision rather than a simple software purchase. Organisations need systems that can support the full assessment process, from content creation and exam delivery through to marking, moderation and results management.

An end-to-end platform can reduce the complexity created by separate systems and duplicated processes. Bringing more of the assessment lifecycle into one environment can improve data consistency, simplify administration and reduce the number of operational handovers.

Security remains central. Assessment platforms handle sensitive content, candidate information, responses and results, so organisations need clear controls around access, authentication, encryption, audit trails and incident management. The ability to demonstrate that these controls are effective is particularly important in high-stakes assessment.

Delivery also needs to work across different environments. Exams may be taken in centres, remotely or through a combination of both. Platforms may also need to support different devices, operating systems, connectivity levels, languages and accessibility requirements.

Accessibility is part of the core assessment process rather than an additional feature. Candidates must be able to navigate and complete assessments without technology creating barriers unrelated to what is being tested. Support for assistive technologies, keyboard navigation, readable layouts and clear error handling therefore directly affects the quality of delivery.

Assessment integrity is another major consideration. Depending on the examination, organisations may use identity checks, secure browsers, supervision, proctoring, device checks or question randomisation. These measures need to be proportionate and balanced against privacy, accessibility and candidate experience.

Resilience becomes especially important during peak assessment periods. Systems must be able to cope with high volumes, maintain candidate responses and recover effectively from disruption. Backups, monitoring, disaster recovery and clear incident procedures all reduce operational risk at critical times.

The marking process also requires strong controls. Digital platforms may need to allocate scripts across distributed teams, support moderation and adjudication, track marker performance and identify exceptions. Where artificial intelligence is introduced into marking or feedback, RM’s framework places continued emphasis on appropriate human oversight.

Data governance is equally important. Organisations need clarity over who owns assessment data, where it is stored, how long it is retained and who can access it. Reporting also needs to support operational decisions, including tracking attendance, completion, incidents, marking progress and results.

Integration can determine how easily a platform fits into an organisation’s existing technology. Assessment systems may need to connect with candidate registration, identity services, learning platforms, communications tools and results systems. Reliable interfaces can reduce duplicated records and make future expansion easier to manage.
